Year 2 2019 - 2020

Mrs Coyne

Welcome to Year 2

Mrs Coyne, Ms Greatorex and Mr Howarth are excited to welcome you back to Highfield after the Summer holidays

We introduced our new curriculum at the end of your time in Year 1, when we celebrated man's first steps on the moon. We will continue to build on this over the term. You are coming back to our new, exciting approach to learning, with two big over-arching questions for Key Stage 1: 'Where do you belong?' and 'Way up high, way down low, which way do you want to go?'. These run through our learning and are woven into our Art, World Knowledge and D.T.

We have a trip planned for 24th September, where we will explore local habitats and find out more about which creatures inhabit Cheshire woodland and how we can look after them.

We are committed to engendering a love of reading and will have three shared reads a week as well as a carefully planned guided read to ensure a range of reading skills are developed.

Thank you for working with us last year to encourage your child to read regularly. We hope that we can continue to work in partnership to develop your child's curiosity and love of learning. It is important to encourage your child to read regularly and talk through their books. We will send home three books each week from their reading band.

There will be a reading meeting this term to share reading expectations for Year 2. Further details will follow.

Please have a look at our termly overview to see how we ensure there is full curriculum coverage.

There is a new approach to homework this year. We have created a homework menu with a range of tasks from across the curriculum. You can choose any tasks to complete and can present them in your chosen way. We just ask that children complete a minimum of 3 per half term.

Alongside this we will set homework alternatively on and

Logins will be stuck into reading diaries and homework books.

Things to remember in year 2:

  • P.E Mondays and Fridays with Mr Forbes
  • Spelling Test on Friday
  • Homework set on Friday and due in on Wednesday
  • Five reads due in on Friday
