Phonics and Early Reading

Reading at Highfield

We use Collins Big Cat series as our skeleton scheme in order to ensure children are reading suitably challenging texts at the appropriate level at school. These are supplemented by texts from Oxford University Press which include Projext X Origins, Project X Code and Treetops. Each class has a stock of non- scheme books which children can choose from to read at home.

Phonics and Early Reading

At Highfield school we follow a systematic synthetic phonics programme. Currently, we are working as a trial school for the Phonics programme Ready, Steady, Phonics which has been developed by Literacy Counts. Daily plans are accompanied by interactive whiteboard lessons and workbooks are used for the practice and application of phonics learning which continues across the currciulum in both reading and writing. Fully decodable books accompany the programmme and are available to download at school and at home. In addition, we use Collins Big Cat Series which children read at school and at home. Both schemes offer a variey of genres including fiction, non fiction, poetry and plays which compliment the curriculum.
